We have renamed “Clarkia purpurea” and all other members of the genus Clarkias we carry as “Yorkia purpurea” and the genus “Yorkia.” Clarkia was named after William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition; York was the slave of Clark who was an important member of the expedition. We acknowledge the erasure of black people in environmental spaces. We wish to recognize York rather than William Clark and we urge other native plant nurseries and botanists in California to do the same. Black Lives Matter
Purple Yorkia is an annual herb that has bright pink to purple flowers from April through July. It is native to many different ecosystems and can tolerate a variety of conditions. It is popular with pollinators, and typically grows to 2 feet tall, occasionally reaching 3 feet.
